Vietnam

Introduction to Vietnam as a Tourist Destination

Vietnam is a country of remarkable diversity, where ancient heritage, vibrant cities, dramatic coastlines, river deltas, and mountain landscapes come together to create a compelling travel experience. Stretching from the cool north to the tropical south, the country is shaped by regional contrasts in climate, cuisine, architecture, and culture. This variety makes Vietnam an excellent destination for thoughtfully curated luxury journeys, allowing travellers to experience its layered beauty with comfort, authenticity, and style. Vietnam is also strongly positioned for cultural travel, nature-based exploration, beach escapes, and culinary discovery.

Vietnam at a Glance

Important Information

Weather & Climate

The climate in Vietnam varies considerably by region because of the country’s long north-to-south shape and diverse topography. Northern Vietnam experiences cooler winters and hot, humid summers, while the centre has a more tropical monsoon pattern and can be affected by seasonal storms. Southern Vietnam remains warm year-round, with distinct dry and rainy seasons. As a result, travel planning should be tailored carefully to the regions included in the itinerary.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Vietnam depends on the route and travel priorities. Official tourism guidance notes that March to May is particularly favourable countrywide, though there is no single bad season for the entire country because different regions perform well at different times. Northern destinations such as Hanoi and Halong Bay are often pleasant in spring and autumn, while parts of Central and Southern Vietnam are especially attractive in their dry periods.

What to pack?

Pack according to the season and the specific regions on your itinerary. For the north during cooler months, layered clothing and a light jacket are advisable, especially for Hanoi, Halong Bay, and upland areas such as Sapa. For central and southern regions, lighter breathable clothing is generally appropriate, along with sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, and rain preparedness where relevant. Modest attire is also recommended for temple visits and places of cultural importance.

Visiting Sites of Cultural Importance

Respect for local customs is essential when visiting temples, pagodas, memorials, and sacred spaces in Vietnam. Travellers should dress modestly, behave quietly, and follow site-specific rules regarding footwear, photography, and access. It is advisable to remain observant and respectful in religious or ceremonial settings, particularly where worship is ongoing. Such sensitivity greatly enhances the travel experience and reflects well on guests.

Visa/Entry Permit

Vietnam’s current visa policy allows e-visas for citizens of all countries and territories, with stays of up to 90 days and multiple entry under the policy introduced on 15 August 2023. In addition, certain countries benefit from visa exemption arrangements, with some unilateral exemptions allowing stays of up to 45 days. As requirements can change, travellers should always verify the latest rules through official Vietnamese immigration or tourism sources before departure.
